We asked English, Welsh and Scottish Government Ministers for Guidance for Social Workers on working with issues of gender identity

Updated: Dec 11

"EBSWA is concerned that social workers are being prevented from working in a safe, evidenced based way due to significant limits on the way that gender identity is responded to across the profession and by social work employers and regulators."

This is how they replied:

"Social workers’ support for service users, including those who are gender-questioning, through the means of evidence-based practice is vital to achieve this." Refers to regulatory and service standards by national and local government. The responsible Minister, Janet Daby, is a former social worker, but she and her officials seems not to be aware of Cass, or of the persecution of social workers by SWE and/or employers for standing up for evidence base practice.

Lizzy Pitts, Senior Social Worker from Cambridge who had to take her employer to an ET to defend her right to believe in the reality of sex, and of same sex attraction

Rachel Meade who had to take SWE and Westminster CC to an ET to win case against persecution for believing sex is real

"The Scottish Government has followed with interest the publication of the Cass Review's final report. The Chief Medical Officer for Scotland established a multidisciplinary team to review the report's recommendations and identify whether, and how, those recommendations may apply to NHS Scotland services. Cass Review – implications for Scotland: findings report - gov.scot (www.gov.scot)."   This report wrongly cites "gender" as a protected characteristic and the need for "co-production" of services with those with "lived experience". However the CSWO

"The individual examples you cite underscore the need for the social work sector to hold appropriate discussions .... and we are ready to support the sector with any further consultations and discussions." We will be taking up their invitation.

Welsh Government continues to insist on protecting gender identity rather than evidence

"SCW has noted the contents of the Cass Review and will continue to consider how to apply the learning in the social care sector in Wales.

"The Welsh Government and our regulators, continue to support the development of an antidiscriminatory and supportive social care sector in Wales. We are committed to the Welsh Government’s Equality Diversity and Inclusion, Anti-racist, HIV and LGBTQ+ commitments for Wales."

EBSWA would welcome comment from Welsh social workers on how best to respond to this stonewall of support for commitments the Welsh Government has made to the queering of children and childhood.
